Allergy drops, also known as sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), are a form of treatment designed to reduce or eliminate allergic reactions over time. Instead of getting allergy shots (injections), patients place small doses of allergens under the tongue in drop form.
Allergy drops have been safely used worldwide for more than 60 years to treat allergy symptoms. They are gentle enough for infants, children, and individuals with chronic health conditions who cannot receive allergy shots.
Like allergy shots, allergy drops contain the same FDA‑approved antigens—the only difference is that the treatment is taken orally rather than by injection.
Allergy drops train the immune system to become less sensitive to allergens by introducing small amounts over time. Taken daily under the tongue, the drops contain gradually increasing doses of allergen extract. As tolerance builds, symptoms like sneezing, itching, and swelling often lessen—and may even disappear. For many patients, allergy drops provide long‑lasting relief and have been shown to be as effective as allergy shots.
Most patients are on allergy drops for 3-5 years.
